Buddy needs some TLC

Have you ever heard the story of a person who truly rescues a dog and with a lot of time and training the dog does a complete turn around - at the end of the story, this dog wins awards such as the good citizenship award, agility ribbons, etc??? Have you ever wished this person could be you??? I am talking true rescue with a capital R, not just running to the local shelter and taking the best dog they have and taking a few training classes.

If you have the time and are up for the challenge, I may be the dog to make your dreams come true. You see I need a ton of TLC - that is Time / Love / Consistency. I am a dog who was born with great stuff, but I was never trained on how to show it off.

Time is something that is really important for me, since I have spent ways too much time in the shelter. I was recently adopted by folks who thought they were up for the challenge of training me, but unfortunately didn't realize that it also took time. Time not just for learning new things, but time for me to become part of the family and time to teach me just how to chill out and spend some downtime together. You, me and the rest of the family!

Love is going to be the easy part. As long as you can take a few minutes to give me a little love; I will take all the time I have to love you back.

Consistency is the part that you will need to work on. I will follow your lead and do what you want, but you will need to constantly be reminding me of what you want and more importantly NOT want me to do. You in turn will be able to have fun training an incredibly smart dog - yes that's me. And after months and months and months of consistency, you will look back and proudly walk down the street with a dog on a slack leash - that dog will be you best BUD forever - that dog will be me Buddy!

A few weeks ago, I went for another great adventure. It was not the adventure that I was suppose to go on, but I just couldn't help myself! You see the Mrs put me in the car and took her eyes off from me for two seconds before closing the door. FYI - it only takes two seconds for a smart dog like me to escape and escape is what I did. The game was called "Catch Buddy"! All of the staff and volunteers from the shelter ran up and down the street and then over to a local car dealership chasing after me. What fun! When I decided that it was time to give in - a treat, the command sit and asking for a high-five is all it took.

Well you guessed it, I am now back at the Bangor Humane Society just waiting for that special someone with TLC to come and rescue me. You won't be sorry if you give the TIME and CONSISTENCY, I will throw in the LOVE part!

Santa Visits BHS

What a great day it was at the Bangor Humane Society as area dogs had the opportunity to meet Santa. As santa passed out many treats and decided most dogs were especially good little dogs, he received more then his share of high-fives, handshakes and even a few kisses. Buddy Loves the Great Outdoors!

The Bangor Humane Society is offing a special during the month of October - $30 for dogs who have resided at the shelter for more then 30 days. I, Buddy, am part of this deal!!! Today I had a well deserved break from all the barking and goings on of shelter life - today I was the pick for Dog's Day Out.

I'm sure you are just waiting to hear how my day went, so now I am about to tell you:

The car ride was great with the exception of my long legs and long tail trying to fit into a small car that does not have much of a backseat. I was very much in control during the whole drive, even when I discovered I could stand in the backseat and reach my head out the moonroof. This was too cool and this also got the Mrs to laughing - I think I love laughter. On the way home, I actually was able to curl up in the front seat and have a little rest.

On the leash I do have a tendency to pull:( This would be a project for my future owner and I to work on. We worked on it today and I do understand the concept - I just need practice.

I LOVE nature - all the smells and sights in the Bangor City Forest were incredible. So incredible that I was more interested in the outdoors then I was in the people passing.

When I mentioned people above, that did not include children. We met several groups of these little folks and they all wanted to pat me. I was as calm as could be while receiving multiple pats all at one time. I think the Mrs was a bit apprehensive, but I did great! Also, listening to their little children squeals during our walk made me want to smile.

Okay, now I will tell you one of my downfalls. It is probably why I am still hanging out at the shelter and not at a forever home. Other dogs! I think I love other dogs - my tail wags like crazy / I pull out of control / I just want to get at them and say "Want to be friends?". But rumor has it that when I have had visits with other dogs, I want to show my dominance - like getting on top of them, if you know what I mean. This is not a good thing. So today when I did meet a dog, I pulled out of control and was quickly ushered away from the other dog. The Mrs did not want to have me show my not so good stuff off on our outing today.

Lastly, we went up on a grassy hill for a photo shoot. I do not care for cameras being aimed in my direction and I do love green grass. So you probably got my drift - the picture-taking was short lived.

Murdoc wants a hug...

What the heck is Murdoc doing back at the shelter??? I will say that the Bangor Humane Society does a great job in making sure folks (yes, the two legged ones) realize the responsibility of adopting a pet and they also do their best in making sure each adoption is the right fit. But every once in a while the adopter is not who they portrait and that's what happened to poor Murdoc.

Sadly to say he is back in the shelter waiting for the right owner who is not only responsible, but is also looking for a dog who just wants to hug. I've been volunteering at the Bangor Humane Society for almost two years and I don't think I have seen a dog who just wants to sit and hug as much as Murdoc. The downside of being sooo loving is that he does not like being left alone. He would definitely not do well in a home where he was left for the day while the humans were at work.

I did bring Murdoc to my home to meet Lola a while back and that did not go well at all. You see Lola likes dogs who love to play with her. In fact, Lola really likes dogs who do not like me. Murdoc could care less about other dogs, but loves to hug and sit next to humans. Obviously it was not a great scene. My thoughts are that poor Murdoc deserves a home where there is no competition for the hugs and kisses from the two legged folks.

Paw's on Parade 2011

What a successful (although wet) day it was last Saturday for the Bangor Humane Society. That is the day Paw's on Parade gathered 300 humans and their dogs to walk and raise over $56,000 to benefit the shelter and the animals they house.

I attended with my dog Lola, husband and camera. I captured too many photos to even try to post in a blog, but have add all photos to my photography website (click on the hi-lighted words).

I will mention a few special moments to my day:

Seeing Chuck who had been a long term resident at the shelter (yes, "had been" means he was adopted this week). He is a very sweet, well behaved dog who just needed a chance. Those marble eyes of his made him look just a little bit crazy; which he was not.

Also attending from the shelter was Buddy. What a handsome dog he is. I believe at this time he is still waiting to be united with his new owners.

....and you all know me as being a sucker for a dog who loves me. Well, this little beagle couldn't keep his eyes off from me. Oops - it was his nose and it wasn't me:( It happened to be the pocket full of treats I had. He sniffed me out anytime I was within smelling range. And the children were delightful. Thanks to them for rescuing such a great sniffing dog.

Thanks to those involved and thank you to all those who have adopted/rescued a dog and given them the much deserved chance!!!

Dog's Day Out for Chuck

If you have been to the Bangor Humane Society in the last few months, you have probably seen a dog with marble eyes. Well that dog is me - Chuck. I am what they call a long term resident. There have been other great dogs written about on this blog who have also been long term residence. We all remember Jack, Vicki and Bubba - all great dogs that took a little longer then norm to find the perfect home. Well that's me - just hanging out here waiting for the perfect match.

Enough about me and more about me day out:

It started out with having a harness put on me. I will say that a harness makes a dog feel like the human is in control and makes a dog not want to pull so much. While on dog-walk here at the shelter, I give the workers a true workout - meaning I pull quite a bit. But once that harness was put on me, I slowed right down and enjoyed the walk.

I will say I love car rides. Especially sticking my head out the window - just head, no body:) I think I would have really liked a car with windows in the backseat - but at this point I am not going to be choisy.

Our walk went great with me sniffing and then watering every thing in sight (if you get my drift). I will say that I only watered the green stuff - never tires like some dogs do. While out we met many people and dogs. The Mrs always started out cautiously, since word is that I may not care for other dogs (obviously, I wasn't aware of this today). Today I fell for all dogs and most people.

While on our walk, I did have one person spook me. She was the lady in the caretakers building. I was looking at that building like it would be a nice place to visit and then out of nowhere up pops a head. Boy, was I spooked. I started barking; trying to say stay away. This women really wanted to meet me, but new that I was quite nervous. This is when the Mrs distracted me by having me show my stuff - I know sit, stay, down, paw and a whole lot more. As with most dogs, a treat is in order after such a performance. That's when the lady slowly approached me and gae me lots of reassuring pats. After this, I decided it would be fun going in her building. That's when she suggested my name should be Snoopy.

Speaking of names - my name is Chuck. Not a bad name, but if you decided you liked something else I could adjust. Somebody on the trail mentioned they would name me Mesmer, since my eyes are quite mesmerising. FYI - I am not blind. I just have very different eyes or you may say special. They make me look a bit loco, but I'm not. I am just a great well behaved pit bull looking for a forever home.

Further down the trail, we met a woman who had two collie rescues. We did a bit of meet and greet then continued our walk with them. The Mrs and this woman got to walking and talking about everything from shelter dogs to art - and us dogs just walked along enjoying each others company and sniffing all there was to sniff. Word has it that these dogs don't know how to play - I did a few play bows and they just looked at me. I did say that there was a lot of talking going on - well so much that we lost track of time. We spent over half an hour with them and then realized time was running out and we needed to get going. Speaking of running - we had to run all the way back to our car!!!

Well back at the shelter waiting for the perfect home. Please remember that looks aren't everything - behind these crazy eyes of mine is a very well behaved dog who would love to be loved.

One Down, Two to Go!!!

On Sunday one of the staff members at the Bangor Humane Society took Sunny to the WeinerFest. She had a spendid time and got to show her stuff. Good news was that she met her new owners there! Yes, that's right - Sunny is no longer available for adoption.

I, Jax, on the other hand am still hanging out waiting for somebody to come in and fall in love with me!!! Today was pretty special. Two volunteers came in to walk dogs prior to the doors to the shelter being closed for the night and you guessed it - they both picked me. The second one did not realize that I had already been out, but I think secretly she would have taken me any ways. It was the Mrs and I know she is madly in love with me. We played ball - I will retreive and leave it. We hugged - this is the part she loves and I don't mind it either. We just ran around and had a grand time. I think I love people and other dogs - did I mention the other dog I played with through the fence. As I said, this was a great time. Now I'm just hanging out waiting for that certain someone.

By the way - Harley is also hanging out waiting for his forever home!!!

Photo Shoot for Harley

Today was the day for me to get my photo done for PetFinder and I will say this "I do not like cameras and I do not like having my photo taken!" You wouldn't know it by the looks of the photos on this blog, but you should have seen those that were not published - not good:(

We went to the Bangor City Forest and did a bit of walking prior to the camera being brought out. I am very STRONG, so my advice for you is to invest in a harness. I do not pull unless I see something I want and then I just pull very hard - not out of control pulling such as a lab, just very deliberate. This being said, our walk today was cut short since the Mrs did not have a harness. I know with a harness things would have been different.

A little about me - I am a friendly nine year old pitbull who was surrendered because my family was having some issues and didn't have a place for me to live. I am really not happy about being here at the shelter and am anxious to find my next forever home. This week I was seclected to appear on Channel 5's Pet of the Week. If you watch this, you will note that I am very stressed in front of the camera.

One last thing - car rides are great, but I would love to be one of those irresponsible dogs and hang out the window - like with my body half out! The Mrs put a stop to this immediately:(, but I did enjoy the ride even though. Well back at the shelter and I am patiently waiting for my forever home!

Day Out for Jax!!!

You may remember me hanging out at the Bangor Humane Society a few months ago - back then my name was Cadbury. Well I'm back here again due to the fact that the folks who adopted me were both teachers. Our summer was spectacular, but once school started it was determined that I have a bit of separation anxiety - well maybe more then a little. So if you are the type who hangs out at home or you could take a dog to work with you - I may be just the dog for you!!!

Today we went for a walk in the Bangor City Forest. I love smells, people, children and affection. Today consisted of all of these. I walk very well on leash - only pulling if I saw a dog that looked like he might want to meet me. Most of the time I was asked to sit and bribed with a treat - and yes I obeyed:)

I will say while on our walk I found the smells very distracting. I actually had to be coaxed along at times, because otherwise we could have ended up there until dark. If you wanted a dog to run with, I may be that dog because once I'm running we are just flying by those nice smells. But walks turn into strolls; which turn into lingering over all those smells.

We did meet up with children who were very interested in patting me. That was great!!! They asked the Mrs if I could shake paws - boy was she surprised when I raised my paw up for them. Oh and by the way I did expect a treat for this performance:) I love treats more then anything and I will say I love most things!

The afternoon ended with the Mrs and me just hanging out in the field enjoying our last few minutes together. Did I mention that she loves hugs as much as I do - especially those from a pit as affectionate as I am. I know I will be one of those special dogs that will always have a place in her heart.

Well I am back at the Bangor Humane Society just waiting for the perfect home. The folks here all love me too and are really crossing their fingers that I am out of here sooner then later.

Dog's Day Out for Sunny

I was the first dog to participate in Dog's Day Out today and I loved it. I am a female beagle / dachshund mix who loves people. I am very social and that is one reason I was surrendered by my previous owners. They thought it was perfectly okay to leave a dog like me outside by myself. I didn't think so and did more then my share of barking to let them know this.

Our first stop was a quick trip to the Littlefield's home. Did I say that I liked people more then I like dogs. On the other hand, the Littlefield's dog Lola likes dogs who prefer her over people - mainly her owners. Well that being said, we didn't see eye to eye so our visit was cut short.

Next stop - Bangor City Forest!!! I think I love smells as mush as I love people. The walk was great, no pulling for me. We met other dogs and I didn't appear to keen on these encounters. But I will say meeting other people of all types was something I enjoyed. I was very well behaved - never jumping.

At one point we met a little boy who was full of hugs - this was great!!! I truly love children and I really love hugs. My profile at the Bangor Humane Society says that I get along with kids, cats and dogs. My experiences with dogs today might be due to the fact that I wasn't feeling quite up to par. You see I was fixed yesterday and I may have not been in the mood to run and play with other dogs.

On the way back to the shelter, I took the opportunity to stretch out in the front seat using the console for my head rest. Oh one last thing - I love car rides. So if you are looking for a small dog with short legs, who loves to go for walks and smell all the good smells, who loves to go for car rides, who loves hugs especially from children - I could be the dog for you. A Few Hugs for Murdoc

Having only about half an hour to spend volunteering at the Bangor Humane Society, I decided to take Murdoc out in the play area and snap a few photos while he did some running around.

He spent the first few minutes sniffing out all the nice smells. Soon he noticed the space under the gate. This quiet dog came to life and in two seconds flat was on his belly trying to escape. So needless to say a fenced in yard would be best for him.

Taking photos of other dogs the yesterday was a struggle due to the treat bag. Although, Murdoc loved the treats and took them gently, it was not his main focus. What was his main focus was me; which made taking photos a bit of a challenge - when photographing anything, you need your subject at least a foot away from you. If not, you get the big nose look :)

At one point I just sat down to get low and Murdoc came and sat right next to me. After this, we just sat there giving each other big hugs - well, I was the one doing most of the hugging and he was the one breaking my heart. Who can resist a dog that needs a hug so desperately that he will forgo playtime.

Well you probably guessed it, Murdoc is back in his kennel waiting for somebody with hugs to spare to come and adopt him. He is a two year old Beagle Mix - I would say the mix part is full of love!

Brutus gets Adopted, but Look Who's Still Available for Adoption!

Great news for Brutus!!! I would like to take this opportunity to remind folks that the barking dogs in the kennels at the Bangor Humane Society are generally not the same outside of that kennel. This is what happened to Brutus. I showed up at BHS to give Brutus a 20 minute break and a little bit of play time. At the same time another dog was being shown in the general area. The people looking at this dog had already bypassed the Brutus hanging out barking in his kennel, but once they saw his loving, playful behavior while outside their minds quickly drifted from the dog in front of them to Brutus.

If you missed your chance adopting Brutus, take a look at the dogs still available for adoption. Don't forget to ask an adoption counciler to meet a dog outside of his kennel if you find one of interest and please remember these guys do not put their best foot forward when in their kennel.

Allyen - The name may confuse you, but she is a female and you can feel free to call her Ally if you wish. Just don't call her "late for dinner". I will say that she is extremely food motivated. This will come in handy when you you decide to teach her a few tricks - and I will say she loves tricks if treats are involved!!! She fell in love with the agility equipment - she also fell in love with the treats. She is a six month old box-pit bull terrier mix.

Bruce Lee is a Anatolian Shepherd. He is easy to pick out in a crowd with his size an his one floppy ear. What a sweet and gentle guy he is. Although not very motivated by treats, he was very well mannered. With his size, walking politely on leash and a great disposition are true bonuses. What a wonderful loving dog!!!

If you have never seen a dog with marble eyes, you have got to meet Chuck. Once you get over the creepiness of his eyes, he is a great dog. He is a beautiful brindle pit bull / husky mix. I will say that photographing him was quite difficult because his main interest was treats and the person behind the treat bag. Once we showed him the treat bag was empty, he did a lot better. The main thing was that he took his treats very gently and was never rude!!! Another great dog!!!

Gotti is another young pit bull terrier - only nine months old. I will say that this dog would be fun to teach tricks to, but just to let you know - he has the High-Five down to a science. He also was another one who fell in love with the person with the treat bag - and it wasn't me and it wasn't the camera. So you will note that he is not looking at me or the camera. What a fun dog he is!!!

Poor Mercedes was the guinea pig - the thought was to dress pit bulls up to make them look friendlier. This dog was a real trooper. She pranced around with this dress on feeling extremely foolish, but figured that's what we wanted and we were rewarding her with treats. Don't let her size fool you - she is a two year old Rottweiler / Pit Bull mix who is extremely small. Her previous owners surrendered her because they said she had a problem with food aggression - the staff at BHS could give you some advise on how to train a dog with these problems. While in the play area today, she took treats very gently and was very well mannered. But it might be because there were plently of treats and no other dogs around.

Okay, just about the time I am getting really tired about dogs not paying attention to me and my camera along comes Woody. I think this dog would have done headstands for a treat. He is a two year old, extremely smart boxer / labrador retriever mix who came to the shelter already knowing a whole line up of tricks (sit, down, shake, stay, come and of course High Five to name a few). He came to the shelter, because his previous owners could no long care for him.

Why on earth would you name a dog Harry Henderson? I think I would just call him Harry. I will say that by the time you read this, it may be too late. There has been interest in this one year old hound mix who was brought to the shelter as a stray - somebody actually has put him on hold him until Monday. We are keeping our fingers crossed for him. He was a great dog that walked very politely on leash.

If you are a physically strong and capable of handling and training a two year old active Bullmastiff / Bulldog mix, Daddio could be the dog for you. He's a big boy who is very active and in need of some training.

As a reminder, most dogs do not put their best foot forward while residing at the shelter. Also with so many Pit Bulls in the shelter, I would like to remind folks that the pits are still my favorites - plug your ears Lola. Eighteen months ago I would not have said this - but since I started volunteering at the shelter, I have found them to be the most loving dog there is.

A Chance for Brutus to Meet Lola

That's right today was my opportunity to meet the Littlefield's dog Lola and we got along splendidly! But the question I have is - what the H E double L am I still doing at the Bangor Humane Society looking for my forever home?

Okay, enough whining for me and more about the day. Just as a reminder - this is the second post about me. To read more, go to the previous post.

When first meeting the Littlefield's dog Lola, we did a friendly play bow and decided very quickly that we would become best friends for the day. I think I could get along very well with most dogs.

After entering the house, I did a bit of exploring - upstairs, downstairs and then finally I found where they kept the toys! Soft toys didn't interest me - well maybe just a little if they had a squeaker in them. But I will say those Antler Sheddings are incredible (FYI to my forever home - click on the word Antler Sheddings). Thank goodness Lola is the sharing type and there was enough for the two of us. The two of us took our time and enjoyed what life had to offer without any problems.

After a bit we decided to burn off a little energy and started playing games that belonged outdoors. You see I started chasing Lola and she started jumping on the couch. That is when it was decided that the outdoors would be a good place for us. I am truly a well behaved dog, but can easily become overstimulated and forget the rules.

I will say that I did not think we would both fit into that little car especially since we were both very wound up. But we did and we settled right down We had to stay in the car for a few minutes while the Mrs made sure both gates were secured to the local tennis courts. No we were not going to be playing tennis, but it seems like nobody else was playing either.

Once inside the fenced in area, I ran like crazy. A tennis ball was tossed my way and I chased it, but didn't feel the need to return it - there were way more better things to do. Such as chase Lola.

What fun I had and I don't think I have burned off that much energy in quite some time. I did mention earlier that I have a problem with becoming overstimulated - remember I am still quite young. Well, I started getting so excited that I was jumping over the top of Lola. That's when it was decided that the games would end on a happy note. I was put on a leash and we were taken for a short walk. I surprised the Mrs with how fast I was able to calm right down.

Back in the car, I decided I was very tired and tried to lay down. This was very comical - I think even Lola had to smile at this.

Somebody Needs to Give Brutus a Chance!

You see the word chance came up more then a few times today while participating in Dogs Day Out. Most folks were either saying my name should be Chance (as in the movie Homeward Bound) or somebody should give me a chance. I think it should be the later. If you gave me a chance and wanted to change my name to Chance that would be okay also. I will say this - I am not as mischievous as the dog in the movie.

Well enough of that and more about my day out.

I love car rides and sticking my head out the window is always a bonus. When I was told to get into this little sports car, I had my doubts that I would fit. But with the front seat pulled all the way back and in the laying down position, I fit in quite well. If you were the type that likes their dogs sitting in the backseat, that would be just fine also. On the way back from Petco, I jumped into the back seat and found it quite comfy for laying down - squished, but comfy.

While walking in the Bangor City Forest, I took in all the smells and kept wanting to taste the nice green grass. No pulling for me, actually at most times I was on a very slack leash.

Do I like children - you bet I do. I also don't mind being patted by the children's owners either. I never tried to jump on them or even give them kisses. I just stood their enjoying what they had to offer.

How did I do with other dogs today??? There were no other dogs, so this challenge was not met. I think I would have done fine, since when I heard a few in the far distance I barely bat an eye.

We came to a stream and it appears I may not have ever been around water. When a rock was thrown in, I timidly put my nose in and it was kinda cool.

Now for the real challenge. I did say Petco earlier, right? Well, we went to Petco and I did great. No pulling, just a lot of sniffing for me. When we got to the counter with our stuff, I was offered a treat. I sat up like a the well-mannered dog that I am and accepted the treat very gently.

I am now back at the Bangor Humane Society waiting for my forever home. If you would like to give me a chance, please contact them soon.

Rollie Gets Adopted and This Time It's Forever!!!

I love telling a great story and this is truly a great one. Usually I let the dog tell the story, but this time I am letting the angel who has adopted Rollie tell her story. Being a photographer, I normally love taking credit for all photos on this blog. But it appears that Rollie's new owner is also a photographer, so all photos in this post were taken be her.

"On our trip to Massachusetts to visit with family over the 4th ..our boy Jimmie-Rae (Pit bull ) age 13 passed away. I could not handle the thought of going back to Nova Scotia to an "empty" house...so I did something I never thought I would do..I went to the Bangor Humane Society and adopted ROLLIE!!! He is doing wonderful and seems to love it here...thank you to all that have been in Rollie's life over the past few months...The love that was shown the day of the adopted was something I will never forget!!!"

I am so happy that a dog as special as Rollie has found such a great home. Sometimes things are just meant to be and this appears to be one of those times. Thank you for all involved in this adoption!

Not All Dogs Like Other Dogs or Rollie is Available for Adoption

Just because you're a dog, does not mean you will like all other dogs - especially when that dog wants to be part of your family. Many dogs love being an only dog and wonder why we would bring competition into their home. I will say that I understand where they are coming from - I am a very social person who loves other people, but I love my space and would not be happy having somebody else moving into my home.

This is what happened to Rollie. The initial meeting with family members, including their family dog, went splendidly. As much as Rollie would have loved being part of a two dog family, their dog decided that it had been perfectly happy being an only dog. I will say that when Rollie visited my home for the weekend, he was very easy going and could easily be pushed around by Lola. This probably added to the problem, since the other dog sensed that he could be a bully and Rollie would not fight for her spot.

Successful Week @ BHS

The goal of saying "Goodbye" was met with flying colors last week at the Bangor Humane Society. With 15 dogs, 11 cats and 29 kittens finding new homes, you may be asking yourself what more could they have done. Well, let's throw in reuniting 6 lost pets with their families.

FYI - one of those dogs finding a forever home was Rollie. The family who adopted him was looking for a dog that needed some loving and Rollie definitely deserves more then his share. The Littlefields and Lola wish Rollie and his new family our best!

Remember, being part of the Bangor Humane Society's family of staff and volunteers means saying "Goodbye" often. Sometimes it's hard, but that is always the goal.

Rollie Spends the Weekend Recuperating @ the Littlefield's

I am a very loving pit bull who has recently had knee surgery. My foster family had to go away for the weekend and this gave me the opportunity to go visit the Littlefields and their dog Lola.

I would have loved to get out there and run with Lola, but that was not part of my rehabilitation. I love most dogs and would do well in a home with other dogs. Lola at times got a bit jealous, but I could understand where she was coming from and let her be. It could also have been that I know my manners and always do as told. You see Lola has alot of terrier in her and well.... we wouldn't want to discriminate against a breed, but she can be quite stubburn. FYI - I didn't mean to show her up in the manners department, that's just me!

I will let you know that I am a bit of a sleepy head. Napping on a Saturday afternoon or sleeping in on a Sunday morning is just fine for me. The addition of a nice dog bed and I will sleep like a baby and also snore like crazy!

I don't care much for the stuffed dog toys. But please, please, please consider giving me one of those antler sheddings that Lola has. She didn't think too much of them until I showed up - thank goodness there was more then one!

One more thing that I really love is being held and giving kisses. Obviously this was one thing that did not make Lola very happy, but how could I resist such a great invitation. FYI - with two humans in the household, there were enough hugs and kisses for two dogs!!!

Well the weekend was great, but for now I am settled back in with my foster family and their dog Pepper. I have just recently been put up for adoption, but will not be residing at the Bangor Humane Society. I will be staying with my foster family. Please do this sooner then later, since I am a really great dog and hope not to be available for long.

Blog Neglect and Daisy Gets Adopted

There has been a bit of blog neglect on the Littlefield's part - but the good news is that I, Daisy, have been adopted. My thoughts are that my new name should be Annie, as in the movie. You see I got adopted by somebody who is out to change my world and life is grand!!! I have a whole new wardrobe, new toys and everything a dog could ask for. The best part is that I have found a forever home where I am loved and well cared for.

Update on Vicki

I am always happy when I receive updates of the dogs who have visited my home, but I was especially happy when I recently received an update on Vicki (to read her story, click on her name). It seems she has fit into the home of her new family really well. It appears that camping is in their future and I'm sure having Vicki along will add to the adventure.

Vicki was a true success story for my blog and I am so happy to be part of such a wonderful adoption. If you are looking for a great story about a great pitbull, don't forget to read all about her.

How did Simon's Birthday Party end at the Bangor Humane Society?

It seems that Simon's birthday wish was for his friends to contribute items to help homeless cats and dogs. They actual went to the Bangor Humane Society's website and checked out their Wish List (if you click on the words "Wish List", you will also find items needed by the shelter). It appears they not only brought in food and treats, but also homemade toys filled with catnip. If you look closely, you will notice that the house cat was very excited to see such great donations.

After making this generous contribuation, Simon and his friends (Abby, Charissa and Roger) went directly to visit the cats residing at BHS - well that is after Simon spent a few minutes playing with Austin and his newest cat toy.

Thank you Simon for being so generous at such a young age and thank you Abby, Charissa and Roger for being part of this gererous party!!! Lastly, a huge HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you.

On such a happy occasion, I am sorry to pass on the sad news that Daisy (a.k.a. Mama) and Grimley are still available for adoption.

Day Out for Daisy (a.k.a. Mama)

What a great day this was! A bit rainy, but this was my day out for a little R&R. I have been residing at the Bangor Humane Society for quite some time:( Why? you ask - because my previous owners were not the responsible type and it kinda rubbed off on me. I will let you know that things for me have changed and I have been spayed and will no longer be adding to the problem of unwanted dogs. You guessed it, I had a litter of the cutest puppies. They have all been adopted and here I sit just waiting for my forever home.

A little bit about myself before we talk about my day. I am a Chihuahua and am very calm. I love to be held and would give you a kiss if you would like. Now I'd love to tell you about my day and how I behaved.

To begin with we went for a walk and it is Spring and there is all that nice, new grass that had rain drops all over it. YUM! I was able to try just a little and then we had to continue on our walk. I walk very politely on leash.

Once in the house, I did a bit of exploring before the Littlefield's dog Lola arrived home. Boy, was she excited to see me. Almost too excited - it took her a while before she could settle down. I don't mind dogs once they are calm - like me, but she was a bit overwhelming at the beginning. Yes, I am fairly calm and just like to hang out. While Lola played tug with the Mrs, I found a little toy to bat around. I will say that I don't enjoy toys as much as some dogs.

All this excitement made me just a little bit tired. A big yawn and I was sleepy. Lola also needed a nap while the adults in the home did a bit of puttering. I think I would like to live in a nice quiet home.

Once I woke up, I was ready for a belly rub - remember this was a day of Rest and Relaxation. Oops, I may not be the most attractive from this angle, but FYI it hasn't been that long since I was nursing a litter of puppies. That's why they keep calling me Mama Dog.

Did I say the adults were puttering. Well, the Mrs was in the kitchen making chicken salad and saved a few pieces for Lola and me. Again, YUM! Lola and I got along just fabulously sharing turns at receiving morsels of chicken. No spatting for us. We just waited patiently for our turn.

The drive back to the shelter was great. I am small enough that I would love to sit in the driver's lap and help drive, but realize that would be an irresponsible thing to do. So sitting in the passenger seat went just fine. I do like to have a little reassuring pat every once in a while.

Grimley walks for Austism Awareness

If you missed Sunday's walk for Autism Awareness, you probably missed me. One of the volunteers at the Bangor Humane Society walked and took me along. What an exciting day!!!

I am an Airdale Terrier Mix and would like to take a few minutes to tell how I behaved on this special day:

The car ride went really well. Love to ride almost as much as I love to walk.

That's correct, I love walks and yes, I walk very politely on leash - no pulling for me. Not even in the crazy crowds of folks walking for such a worthwhile cause.

The crowds were incredible. It seems I really enjoy children, adults and adults dressed as dogs! In fact my previous owners said I lived in sweet harmony with other dogs and children.

Treats are not that big of a deal for me, but I love rawhide and tug toys. If you would like to play tug with me, I will wag my tail for you.

So now I will answer the question you have been asking yourself - "Why, oh why, is such a great dog here at the Bangor Humane Society sitting behing these bars?". Well you see I have a tendency of being an escape artist and my last episode out I encountered a porcupine. With a muzzle for of quills I was surrendered. It appears my previous owners did not have the funds to care for me, so thank goodness that the nice folks here were able to come to my rescue.

If you are looking for a great dog and don't mind keeping me on leash or in a high fenced in yard, come check me out at the Bangor Humane Society or on Pet Finder. Everybody's getting Adopted

After my recent blog about Thea, it's not a surprise she found her forever home so quickly. Wishing her and her new family our best. She is a sweetie!!!

More good news - the family who adopted Diesel (if you don't remember his story, click on his name) have returned to Bangor Humane Society and have now added Kona to their family. Thank you for not only rescuing one dog, but coming back and rescuing another. I have been informed by Diesel's new owners that he is the best dog ever and he has been successfully housebroken, but still loves to hide his treats.

What a treat it is to report such happy endings.

Overnight for Thea

I will let you know that I am a little sweetie or at least that's what the Littlefield's thoughts were about me. I am a Tibetan Terrier Mix which is a small non-shedding dog.

Being non-shedding means I need to be groomed regularly. I will tell you - when I am groomed regularly, I am a happy dog / when I'm not, I'm not so happy. In fact, I can be a bit grumpy. I have seen the inside of the shelter on two different occasions and both times I have come in desperately needing to be groomed. I was not a very happy dog at that point and that may be the reason for my being surrendered. After the nice folks here had me groomed, I became a different dog - HAPPY!!! So if you want a really sweet, small dog and want to take on the responsibility of making sure I am groomed regularly, come check me out.

Well, enough about me and a little about my night.

I met there dog named Lola and she was pretty happy to see me. Maybe a little too happy. All that jumping up and down and racing around, made me a bit nervous. Also, I think I really fell for the Mrs. - I loved playing her shadow. If you are looking for a dog to be your shadow, I may be the dog for you.

Even though I am a small dog, I really enjoy the outdoors. I do really well at walking on a leash. If you like to go for walks and would like the company of a small dog, I may be the dog for you.

When it came time to settle down and chill out, I found my favorite spot perched up on the back of the couch. This worked out really well since Lola likes to sprawl on the couch next to the Mrs. This allowed us both to be close to our favorite person. If you like a dog to snuggle with while you read a book or watch tv, you could become my next favorite person.

Oops, now is when the confessions start. Rumor has it that I am not housebroken:( I was at the Littlefields from 6 at night until noon the next day with only one accident. I actually went the whole night without an incident and held it until I was taken out the next morning. If you have the patience, I do believe we could rectify this problem.

The ride back to the shelter was not bad. I enjoy riding in cars and sit up tall in the passenger seat. No roaming for me. So if you are looking for a dog who likes to ride in a car, stop by the Bangor Humane Society and take me home.

Back at the Bangor Humane Society, I am waiting for the person who is looking for a really sweet, small dog who likes to play shadow, walk on a leash, snuggle with you and enjoys car rides. As a reminder, you will need to be responsible in having me groomed regularly and help me with my house training issue.

Another Day of Volunteering at the Bangor Humane Society

While Lola was laying low with a bit of a cold, I spent some time at the Bangor Humane Society. I showed up just in time for dog walk. All dogs get out at least twice a day to do what they have to do. During this time they get a bit of fresh air and a nice walk. If you like to walk dogs, this could be an opportunity for you.

When first let out most dogs want to take off pulling this way and then that, but once they calm down, a hug and affection are in order. All dogs have their own story, but most are also very loving with a lot to give.

Today being somewhat quiet, I could not control myself with the camera. Here is a medley of the dogs available at the Bangor Humane Society as we speak. HUGE FYI - these dogs while at the Bangor Humane Society are very well cared for, but unfortunately dogs in a shelter do have to be in a kennel (and yes, it does have the appearance of a jail cell).

Meeting Old Friends

This was not a day for Dog's Day Out for the dogs at Bangor Humane Society, but was a day of meeting up with dogs I have posted to my blog in the past.

What a treat it has been to attend training classes with my dog Lola and meeting up with Briggs (who is now named Westley). Who could forget a face like his. If you recall, he is the dog I wanted to rename Adam or Lambert. This lucky dog appears to have found the perfect match.

Then while visiting Petco, who do we meet up with but Max. I never actually took Max home, but spent some time photographing him. He was one of those wise old dogs who makes you wonder what he's thinking. I can't resist sharing photos taken that day. And again, he also has found a wonderful forever home!

Day out for Rudy

Just a few words to give you an idea who I am: Puppy / Lover / Shepherd Mix. That's right I am a six month old shepherd mix puppy who is full of love. I am looking for somebody to take me home and give me tons of attention. In return, I will give them a ton of loving.

Today was a great day. It started out with somebody coming into my kennel to give me a hug. I love hugs and I love giving kisses. That's when it was determined that I was the pick for Dog's Day Out. How did it go, I already mentioned - today was a great day.

When I was first put into the car, I was a little out of control - well maybe more then a little. Once the car was put in gear, I settled right down and sat in the back seat just like a big dog.

Meeting the Littlefield's dog Lola was a ton of fun. I think I surprised her by going right up to her and giving her a big kiss right on the nose. Then we started racing around. That's when the adults decided we needed to take it outdoors. I was put on an extra long lead and we ran like crazy. This way and then that way. Me chasing her and then her chasing me.

At one point, the man of the house brought out the treats. Yes, I do know how to sit for a treat. I also know how to come for a treat. Yes, I do like treats!!!

On our way back to the Bangor Humane Society, the Mrs decided to take me for a walk in the City Forest. I will say that I passed the walking on the leash test - no pulling for me. We met other dogs, which I wasn't all that interested in. We met children, which I wasn't interested in until they asked if they could pat me. I sat very quietly while they pet me. I wanted to give them a kiss, but that didn't happen. We also came acrossed a stream and that was interesting. I waded a bit and then had a puppy burst - that water was cold!!!

Making a Difference for Cats

What happens to 124 cats when 5 vets and over 50 volunteers meet at one facility to make a difference. This is exactly what happened on March 27, 2011. There are no words to tell the story, so here goes:

And I have never seen so many cat carriers in my life.

and then at the end of the day, all cats went home and will no longer be responsible for contributing to the overpopulation of cats!!!

FYI - of the 124 cats, 50 of them were female. One female cat can have 2 litters a year, each with an average of 4 kittens. The first litter can actually have it's first litter that same year - after 6 months. You do the math and you will say YIKES!!!

One Puppy Left and She's the Best!

My name is Marcia and that's right I'm the last puppy of my litter. Also correct, is the fact that I'm a really sweet dog that does not nip. That's pretty good for only being a puppy. Well enough about me and more about my afternoon at the Littlefields.

In the car I sat up just like a big dog even though I couldn't see out the window. I think I like car rides, since I didn't whine one bit.

At the Littlefield home, I got to play with their dog Lola. I was nervous at first, but once I saw how much fun she was I jumped right in.

It was nice to have somebody to play with, but it was also nice being held by the humans - this made Lola a bit sad:(

Well it was a short visit, since there is tons going on at Bangor Humane Society and their Spay Neuter Clinic. So guess where you can find me??? In the Puppy Room at the Bangor Humane Society and don't forget to ask for a puppy named Marcia. Bobby and his Brother Billy are Looking for a Retirement Home

That's right my brother Billy and I are in need of a nice quiet home to retire in. You see I'm blind and my brother is half blind, so we kind of depend on one another. That is why we need to find somebody that is looking for a package deal. Well enough about that - I need to tell you about my day spent outside of the shelter.

First off car rides are something I need to get used to. I did a bit of whining. But when the window was open, I seemed to really enjoy the fresh air.

In the Littlefield home I really enjoyed all the smells of other dogs. I am pretty much blind, so I had to be careful of bumping into things. It didn't take me long to figure out where to go. By the way I love cuddling - it's the best. If you like holding a dog like a baby, that would be me.

When their dog Lola came home from her outing, it seemed like we would get along just fine. She was a little playful, but is used to being gentle since she has spent a ton of time around puppies. Then I had to give a big dog bark (where did that come from). After that playtime was over.

The Mrs was quite surprised at how much I loved the outdoors. I said I was blind, but my sniffer still works and wow were the smells in the yard just great!!!

You may be asking yourself if I'm a package deal why my brother was left behind. You see he had to get himself fixed (even though he wasn't broken). He is now part of the responsible group of dogs that will not be adding to the overpopulation of the dog world.

Well I'm back at the shelter with Billy (that's my brother), just waiting for the special retirement home. If you are looking for a couple of old hotdogs, don't forget to check us out at the Bangor Humane Society.

Just a little bit about myself - I am a BUSY (note - all capitals) Jack Russell Terrier!!! That being said, you probably want to know how my afternoon went at the Littlefields.

First off I met their new dog named Lola. We got along great. It was like having a giant stuffed toy to play with. I found great pleasure in tugging on her, sniffing her backside and nipping at her face.

That's when the Littlefields decided that they would bring out some real toys. I loved retrieving these and then Lola and I got to playing tug. What a great game and to be able to play it with another dog. What a BLAST (note - all capitals) this was!!!

Once that game was over, the man of the house wanted me to sit with

him. I did for a bit, but remember I am BUSY!!! I can run faster then they can, so that's when we played the game Catch Me If You Can. That was also tons of fun. It looks like the Littlefields know all sorts of fun games; which makes it very difficult for a dog to settle down.

On the ride back to the Bangor Humane Society, I sat in the lap of the Mrs (she was the passenger) and settled right down. FYI - I think if they hadn't had Lola to get me all wound-up, I would have settled down sooner. Well I'm back at the shelter just waiting for a forever home.

Great News - Diesel Gets Adopted!!!

Night Out for Diesel

Yikes - did I screw up. I was doing so well until I decided to mark my territory. The Littlefields were downstairs having a little bit of human conversation when I slipped off to their bedroom and decided to leave a present on the floor and leave a big yellow spot right in the middle of their bed. Once the Mrs saw this, I realized whose territory it was and who was in control. Boy was she mad and what was a fun night soon turned into not so fun. If you read all the way to the end, you will see that she softened up a bit and determined with training I may not be so bad.

So how was my night before this terrible event. Great and let me tell you a little bit about it.

The car ride was interesting. It appears that I have not gone on many car rides, since I roamed quite a bit - not disruptive. I just didn't settle down.

Did I mention that I'm a chic magnet? We pulled up next to this car full of girls and they all looked at me and started smiling; I started wagging all over. They all laughed and I wagged even more. I think I like girls:) This happened not only once - but twice.

To tell you the truth, I think I love life. I have a ton of energy and am a very busy boy who likes to go, go, go! I love toys with squeakers in them. If you want to toss them, I will retrieve them and wait patiently for the next toss. If you don't want to play that game, I will take them and throw them around myself. Like I said - very busy.

Treats are great! I love to hide them and then to go find them. I spent a good portion of the time looking for hiding places and trying to cover them up with whatever I could find - jackets, blankets, oops - her favorite sweater. The Littlefields thought this was kind of funny until they had a vision of waking up the next morning with a big hole dug into their couch. Maybe it would be wise to introduce me to crate training, since I might have a hard time controlling myself. I hope tonight goes better then they anticipate.

Well to tell you the truth, going to bed was not that bad at all. They put the dog bed right next to their bed and shut the door (the Littlefields don't own a crate). I spent the first five minutes trying to bury the treat they had given me, but finally settled down when it fell underneath the dog bed. Once it was buried, I was ready for a long snooze.

The next morning we went for a long walk - no pulling for me. Not eve a little tug. I will say I love to smell and I love to look around. Climbing snowbanks makes it so you can see even further.

Just so you know after the big incident, I did settle down quite a bit. If you are interested in a training a very busy dog who loves to give kisses (oops, I forgot to mention this part about me. Yes, will give you a nice big kiss right on the ear.), you can find me at the Bangor Humane Society.

Briggs Gets Adopted

Boy it's a good thing the Littlefields brought me back to the Bangor Humane Society! Soon after getting back to the shelter, my new forever family came in looking for a dog. Guess what? I was the dog they were looking for!!!

Yeah for me!!! But remember if you are looking for a forever dog, there are plenty left at the shelter to choose from. This is not something to say yeah about:( Also, if you don't see the dog you are looking for on your first visit; there are always more coming in daily. This also is something not to say yeah about:(

Overnight for Briggs

This overnight for me was like a child going to Grammies! The Littlefield's have more then their share of toys and treats. Too bad I'm not a treat kind of dog, but it was fun having them offered to me. I would sniffed and then turn up my nose. Only a few times did I take a biscuit - not bad, but..... FYI - people food is very appealing, but I wasn't offered much of this. The exception was scrambled eggs with my breakfast - YUMMMM.

Did I mention toys? I love stuffed toys with sqeakers in them. I love them soooo much that I do not destroy them. I love having them tossed to me and yes - I do retrieve. One of the few words I know is OUT. I drop that toy like a hot potato and patiently wait for it to be tossed again. Balls, kongs and hard toys are of no interest to me, but that may be that there were soooo many soft toys.

Okay this is where the spoiling really starts - it seems that the Littlefields allow dogs on their couch - couch only, no chairs! Boy was that ever relaxing. They wanted to play and cuddle this morning, but it would have meant leaving the comfort of the couch. I will let you know that cuddling isn't bad, but enough is enough. FYI - I love to give kisses, but even that just a few at a time. As you can see, I am pretty laid back.

Outdoors was COLD:) I am short-haired and skinny, so short walks are great - but the idea of lounging on the couch was hard to get out of my mind.

Okay, now's the time for a few confessions. I had an accident last night. The Littlefields forgot to take me out before bed. When I woke up and had to go, I didn't know what to do - so the rest is history:( They woke up and sad "Bad Dog" and I felt really bad. I didn't mean to, but I didn't know where they were.

Confession number two - Men in uniforms need to go very slow. I was a bit nervous seeing a FedEx guy come into the house and got very timid and did some barking. FYI - it seems as though a guy wearing a uniform like that has some experience with barking dogs.

Let's end on a good not - I love car rides. I sit right up and watch what's going on, but eventually will curl up in the front seat (I am small) and take a nap.

The Littlefields think I am a pretty special well behaved dog, so if that's what you're looking for I'm back at the Bangor Humane Society. I am hoping to find a forever home soon!

More Puppies

As a reminder, volunteering at the Bangor Humane Society is not only about cleaning kennels, folding laundry and doing dishes. It also includes walking dogs and playing with PUPPIES!!!

The good news is - for those looking for puppies, they have more then their share. The bad news is - what the heck is going on??? In today's world with spay and neuter clinics, why are there so many unwanted puppies?????

Little Bit's Puppies Get Adopted

Little Bit aka Mama

After spending more then a few weeks at the shelter with their mom, these little puppies were all put up for adoption yesterday. If you blinked your eyes on February 9th, you missed your chance at becoming an owner of one of these sweeties. They were put up for adoption at noon and by 3:00 all puppies had been placed on hold to go on to their forever home.

I also took a few minutes and blinked - I almost missed the opportunity to take photos of any of theses puppies. When I arrived, there were only three little pups left. I could not help sharing their pics! Out of the 8 puppies, there were 2 brindle and the rest were black and white.

As a reminder - these puppies are already adopted. If you are interested in puppies keep checking with the Bangor Humane Society. Also - they always have a wide variety of adult dogs just waiting for a forever home.

Night of Hugs for Agnus

People call me two-faced, but that's not a bad thing. Being a two-faced dog is different then being a two-faced person. I will say if you ever wanted a dog that was full of hugs, you should take a peek at me. I love, love, love to hug!!! If you say off, I will just sit and wait until you want more hugs!

Enough about me, this time should be about how my night went while participating in Dog's Day Out.

Our first mission was a trip to Petco. Did they have some really smelly stuff - and I mean that in a good way. After a little searching, it was determined that we would purchase a giant bone and some Beggin' Strips. To tell you the truth - we should have bought more Beggin's Strips and left the bone for some other dog. I thought a toy would be in order, but it seems the Littlefield's have more then their share of toys. AND YES, everybody in the store thought I was adorable and soooo well behaved.

Once in the Littlefield home, I ran from room to room checking things out. Not in a bad way, just curiously looking. I will say I was very well behaved and did not jump on furniture or get into things that are not for dogs.

Yes, they did have more toys then a dog would know what to do with. I found my favorite which was a stuffed animal with a squeaker inside. We played toss and retrieve. At first I didn't know I was supposed to return it, but soon realized that this was a fun game. When we swapped over to a ball that squeaked, I stopped doing the return thing - I just don't like the feel of that ball:( I will say I am very gentle with whatever is given me.

After the Littlefield's ate supper, we went for a walk in a big parking lot full of huge construction equipment. It was a bit scary since it was after dark, but also quite interesting. I walked great on leash and did not spend a lot of time pulling.

Bedtime was a scarier then just a bit for me. You see I was thinking that I would be invited in the nice big bed, but this was not the case. I was suppose to sleep downstairs. Although they did put a dog bed in their room, but not very close to them - remember I love hugs and it was not close enough for even a little hug. So I stayed downstairs, but kept going up the stairs to check and make sure somebody wasn't waiting for a hug. Soon they realized that the dog bed needed to be very close to their bed. After this happened everybody, including dogs, got a good nights sleep.

In the morning we went out for a bit and it was very COLD!!! I do not particularly like the cold, so if you do and you think I'm the dog for you - you'll need to run out and buy me a coat and maybe some little booties. At noon we went out and the weather was great, but what's with all these snowbanks.

Foster to Adopt

Have you ever wished that you could take a dog from the shelter and just try him out? Good News - Bangor Humane Society has a program that allows you to foster special dogs for two weeks before making that final decision. What makes a dog special? There are some dogs that hate the kennel environment so much that it is impossible for them to put their best foot forward. This program gives potential owners a chance to see what a sweet dog they are in a home environment - your home.

The great news is Max a Million and Bubba are two of these special dogs. If you would like to test drive (oops - I meant foster) one of the great dogs with the option to buy (oops - I meant adopt), hurry to the Bangor Humane Society today.

I personally have taken both of these dogs and they are wonderful outside the kennel environment. Max is a giant sweetheart - don't let his size scare you away. He is very gentle and easy to walk. Max a Million

Hey, my name is Max and this was the day I was picked to participate in Dog's Day Out. I am a great dog, I but don't put my best foot forward in a shelter environment. I want you all to know that it's not my favorite place, so I am constantly barking and being very rude.

Now for today -

I love car rides. If you like to tour the countryside, I may be the dog for you. Laying down in the back seat is the place for me.

I seem to like toys and will return them when they are tossed for me. Today I was able to retrieve squeaky balls, which were quite fun.

When there was mention of the great outdoors, I went right to the window and waited patiently. Snow, snow and more snow - that's what I love!!! I can't get enough of it. Rolling this way, then rolling that way. See my photos below, if you don't believe me.

It seems there is a rumor going around about me not liking men very much. Don't believe everything you hear. When I entered the Littlefield home, the man of the house was holding a broom - now this should have set me back a bit, but it didn't. I walked right in and paid no attention to him until he started talking to me. Nice guy - he gave me a pat, threw the toy a few times. Who couldn't like a guy like him.

I will tell you what type of men I don't respect - it's the men that are built out of snow!!! Now that's just ridiculous. I could not control myself and the next thing I know - it looked like that snowman had pissed himself. The secret is all mine - but I did help:)

Once I had added my artwork to the snowman, we went for a long walk in the city forest. While there we met a few dogs including a little Scotty who was very friendly - I must say that I was also very friendly. I do not pull on a leash unless there is something very interesting. Since I did not pull none-stop, the flexi leash was brought out. This was great, since the smells in a forest are absolutely incredible.

FYI - I am back at the shelter and waiting for somebody that wants a very well behaved dog such as myself. If you like snow and playing in it, I may be the dog you. If you like toys, I may be the dog for you. If you are constantly finding yourself driving from one place to another and would like company, I may be the dog for you. An Overnight for Bubba

Have you ever wished that you could take a dog from the shelter and just try him out??? Well if so, you may want to take a look at me. You see, the Bangor Humane Society has a program for special dogs that allows you to foster for a few weeks before you adopt. And guess what - I, Bubba, am one of those special dogs.

Okay about tonight -

Yeah - an overnight for me. It's been forever since I spent a night away from the shelter and boy did I have a grand time. I tried to be on my best behavior and you could say that goal was accomplished with flying colors. I was given a nice big bone and that kept me occupied for quite a while - YUMMM!!!

I know not to be rude. I know not to jump. I know how to retreive. I am learning leave it/take it. I do not know sit and down. Maybe this is something you could teach me.

I will say I love to go for walks, but have a tendency of pulling. I am not opposed to wearing a harness and realize that it will help you have more control of me. It also reminds me that you are the one in charge.

Just so you know, I am constantly aware of what's going on. I loved watching the comings and goings of the traffic out the window. I only barked once when something didn't seem quite right. At which time, the Littlefields assured me that all was a-okay!

I was invited to hop up on the couch for some snuggle time. I am not much of a snuggler, but I will lay next to you and enjoy the pats. This was a great spot for me to spend the night, which I slept right through!

If you like to go for rides and would like company, I may be the dog for you. Especially if you like looking in your rearview mirror and seeing a reflection of a dog, since the back seat is where I like to ride.

Good News, Good News and Bad News

Today I received some good news and some bad news.

Good News - Fresh Prince was adopted yesterday. What a sweet puppy who loved cuddling as much as he loved food. Wishing him and his new family our best and good luck with the obedience training. With such a smart puppy who loves his treats, he is sure to graduate top in his class.

Good News - It's been a long haul for Brady, but his adoption was finalized on Saturday. Brady spent a good amount of time with a foster family, since he did not do well in a shelter environment. Thanks to this family, he was eventually able to be placed in a Foster to Adopt Program with his forever family. This program allowed his prospective family to see if they were a good match (it seems Brady was in need of a special family) and allowed them a few weeks to test the waters before making a permanent decision. Well, within no time it was determined this was a match made in heaven. Happy dog, happy family, with Saturday being a happy day for all!

Bad News - Bubba is still available for adoption. The good news is that Bubba is available to participate in the Foster to Adopt Program. So if you think you may be interested in a well behaved hound dog, contact the Bangor Humane Society now. I had this dog in my home for an afternoon and found him to be very well mannered. As I mentioned in a previous post, he may not have been taught his basic commands, but he does know no means no and was not rude in any way. He is a very, very sweet dog in need of a forever home. If you are looking for such a dog and would like to try him out, please contact the shelter today at 942-8902.

I am hoping to go to the shelter myself in the next few days, since I am in need of a dog to cuddle and play with. Also, my blog is in need of a new post.

Overnight for the Fresh Prince

Just so you know, I am only 4 months old and I am a pit bull mix. Also you should know, my two favorite things in life are food and cuddles. I probably missed out on these two things while I was wandering the streets of Bangor as a stray. YIKES - I was only a baby and I had to fend for myself. Now that's pretty scary.

Before you get too scared - I'll tell you the second part of my story. Some nice people were worried about me and decided to bring me to the Bangor Humane Society. Most of the dogs here hate it, but it really isn't that bad. I had to stay here for ten days just waiting to see if my previous owners would come and rescue me. No such luck, but it's probably for the best. You see, being a dog owner is a big responsibility and obviously these folks were not that. While here, I have had plenty of food although I am still quite thin. I have also had tons of play time with the staff.

Now about my overnight at the Littlefields -

The car ride was a bit scary at first - I don't think I've been for many rides in my short life. Was I out of control - no way!!! I just sat up like a big dog in the front seat.

When I first entered the Littlefield's home, I sniffed out the food and treat closet - YUMMMM! They had bones that the other dogs were not interested in, but I was extremely interested in. I took them and all treats very gently - until they brought out the popcorn. At that time, I had to be continuously reminded to be "easy". Who would guess popcorn was soooo yummy?

I did not get on furniture or chew anything that was not given to me. Eventually I was invited to hop up on the couch and do a little bit of snuggling. I curled myself up in a ball had arms and legs going in every direction.

Stairs were something also very new to me, but once up those stairs I was invited to sleep in their bed. Yippy!!! In no time, the Littlefield's thoughts were that this is something they would not make a habit of with a dog like me. Did I mention, I love to cuddle and I am also a bed hog. Oh well, it was only one night and if you had a nice soft cuddly dog bed, I think I would like that.

The next day out in the snow was a ton of fun, but also very cold. After only a short time, I was ready to go back in and cuddle by the fire. Then it was back to the shelter for me.

Dog's Day Out for Bubba

Today was my lucky day as I was selected to take part in Dog's Day Out!!! Whoa - this was pretty exciting for me and I think that I put my best foot forward. I may not be the smartest dog at the shelter (I am clueless to basic commands such as sit, stay down). or maybe I have just forgotten what I was once taught. You see, I've been in a few shelters recently and am really hoping to find my forever home soon. I know that I would love to spend time with a loving family and learn all they had to teach me. I am a very lovable guy who loves attention and treats, so I should be know problem to train.

Now for today and how much fun we had -

Car rides are awesome!!! I bounced between the front seat and the back for a few minutes. Then settled down into my special spot - backseat right behind the driver. If you like to go for rides, I think I might be the dog for you.

In the house, I was as good as a dog could be. Not rude, not jumping on furniture - just plain good. I did sniff out the closet with dog toys and chews with no problem at all - FYI, I am part hound. When given a nice big bone that was of no interest to other dogs, I did show interest. Then got to thinking about being outdoors and decided that sitting at the door was where I should be - see I'm smarter then I gave myself credit for.

Outdoors was great. We went down in the backyard for a quick photo shoot. I pulled some, since being still is not what the great outdoors is supposed to be about. Finally we went for a walk on the Old Town bike path. Did you know Old Town is a game preserve and the smells are incredible. I went through times that I pulled quite a bit, but never out of control.

FYI - Here I am back at the shelter waiting for my forever home. If you are interested in a truly sweet dog that is looking to learn some basic commands, I may be the dog for you!!!

Spay and Neutering is a Must at the Bangor Humane Society

I had the privilege of observing Dr Mark Hanks and his team along with BHS's Erica Neal do what they do to help bring an end to the overpopulation of dogs, cats and bunnies. During the surgeries this team spoke of everyday stuff, but when it came time to moving the animal into their spot for recovery that's when all the attention was given to these future pets. The job of one team member was to cuddle the animals as they were coming out of the anesthesia. It was so comforting to observe.

I'm sure that I'm preaching to the choir, but having animals that aren't spayed or neutered creates a huge problem for shelters such as the Bangor Humane Society. There are more then enough dogs in this world to go around and the shelters are full of some of the best. Please think twice (or a hundred times) before purchasing a pet from the pet store or that cute little puppy/kitten that is for sale in the local paper. This only encourages those who are not so responsible to continue doing what they do. The shelters are full of great dogs that are in need of a forever home. By adopting an adult dog you know what you're getting and most times they are already trained. If you really feel the need for a puppy, you will most likely also find one here. Now off my soapbox and back to today.

Those in the forefront today were multiple cats, a bunch of bunnies and two great looking dogs named Daisy and Buster. Of course, I'm all about the dogs and can't wait to see these two siblings back in their kennels and ready for adoption on Monday.

Overnight for Roscoe

The Littlefields did not know what they were in for when they picked me for an overnight. The problem started right from the start - that is when I stole their hearts. This is something they were not prepared for - remember they have recently taken a liking for the pit bulls and I am a miniature poodle.

How was my night out:

The car ride was great, since I laid down in the front seat and had my belly rubbed the whole way to the Littlefield home. I love belly rubs!!!

Treats are great and I take them very gently. I do sit and I do stay. Off is a command that I need to be reminded of. It's just that I get soooo excited. I want to be held and I want you to see me.

Toys are fun. I know how to retrieve and return - not bad for a poodle.

I love to be held like a baby. And did I mention belly rubs???

Bed time was great especially when I was invited to share their bed!!! I don't think they had ever shared a bed with a dog before.

In the morning they went to work and left me by myself. That's when I had an accident. Did I say accident? Because that's what it was - I did not mean to do it!!! Not only pooo, but pee too:( When they went into that room, I went straight to my bed. I felt bad, but it was an accident!

Well, I'm back at the Bangor Humane Society. If you're looking for a dog like me, come on in and check me out.

More Puppies

Today was all about two very active puppies and they, along with their two brothers, are available for adoption at the Bangor Humane Society.

The little girls name is Miss Piggy - as in the Muppets. She is half the size of her brother, so I had a hard time with this name. So I called her as I saw her "Little Girl". The other puppy's name is Fozzy - as in the Muppets. Being a big baby, I called him "Little Boy".

Miss Piggy/Little Girl was very independent and didn't care to be held as much as her brother. Once she was given a treat or toy, she was off and running - no way was she going to be put into a situation of sharing.

Fozzy/Little Boy enjoyed being held and would fall asleep in your arms. He also was right there to pitch in if there was a job to be done - such as dishes. :) When he wanted something, he would start barking. On the other hand if his sister wanted something, she would just go for it. I would sit on the stairs and she made her way up. He just sat and barked.

When it came to take a nap, she found the perfect spot on a stool in the corner. Fozzy/Little Boy tried to take a nap on his own, but soon was looking to her for comfort - finally curling up next to the stool.

And yes they loved the Snow. At first they were a bit timid, but once they made it off from the first step they were on a tear.

The one thing neither puppies liked was being confined. Since they were very curious and were not house trained, this was a must for an overnight. After about ten minutes of crying, both settled down for a long winter's nap (I couldn't resist).

Brady Goes To Daycare

How do I get along with other dogs - GREAT!!! The Fields took me to Bangor Pet Resort and Spa today and I think I actually liked it. Brady visits with the Fields

So what's a well mannered and sweet dog like me doing in foster care? Well you see, I just hated being couped up in a kennel at the shelter. All that stress and other dogs barking was making me not so happy. My lucky day was the day the Fields came in and decided I was the dog they would like to foster. Even though I love it here, I need to get adopted, so they can go on to their next dog project.

How do I behave while at the Field's home. Read on:

First of all I like other people and other dogs. You see the Fields have this dog named Pepper and we really get along great. I am quite friendly with children and I think I might actually like cats. The Field's have a cat named Goldie and I get along with her fine. Squirrels are another matter - they are fun to chase and could be interesting to catch:)

I also love to go for walks. I tend to pull if I see something of interest, so they started using a harness and that helps them keep me in control. It also reminds me that they are in control. I am an extremely smart dog and understand who is the master.

Did I say smart? One of the staff at BHS introduced me to clicker training and I picked right up on it. I know the basic commands - sit, stay, come and down. Of course, I also know the command out. That's when Pepper and I race for the door.

I don't care much for toys, but treats are another story. I do know that you take treats very gently. In fact, somebody once said I was a gentleman when giving me a treat! I know that's a good thing.

Furniture!!! The Fields had a soft spot when they first brought me home - remember I was very stressed. That's when they allowed me to get up on the couch and snuggle or curl up in the recliner. All other

furniture is off limits and I do know that. If you were to not want me on your furniture, that would be okay - maybe you could get me my own comfy bed!

I do love to lay in front of the woodstove. I am short haired and could catch a chill, but I think it has more to do with the homey feeling I get.

Another thing I like doing, is riding in the car. Always in the back seat and some of the time with Pepper. Rides are always welcome, as long as they are not back to the shelter!

FYI - I am also crate trained. I go into the crate willingly, especially if their is a Kong filled with peanut butter and a biscuit. I am usually put in for the night and settle right down.

Alyx Gets Adopted

Day Out for Alyx

If you're looking for a really sweet dog, I may be the dog for you. I was picked to participate in Dog's Day Out today and things went great.

How was the car ride. Great! I loved riding in the backseat and sat up just like a big dog. No bouncing around the car for me.

In the Littlefield home I went up the stairs with no problem. It seems this is something fairly new to me, because coming down was another story. After a bit of coaxing, I did make it down.

Did I mention that I also know that no means no. One look at that comfy furniture and I wanted to give it a try. That's when the "No" command came out. Boy, did I back off quickly - never even made it up on the couch.

I do like toys. When thrown, I will bring them back and when you use the "Out" command I will drop it. Not bad for a puppy - obviously somebody took the time to train me.

Outside in the snow, I started to clean the car of all that white stuff. Looked like an interesting project to me, but the Mrs. had other things in mind which consisted of a walk down back. I stayed right on heel - it looks like that's what I've been taught. I never went further then 3 feet on the flexi-leash. That is until I caught sight of the house - then I bolted up over that hill and right to the doorstep. The inside of the house seemed much more interesting to me then all that white stuff.

Today's visit was cut short, but I do hope that tomorrow will be another Dog's Day Out for me - unless of course I find my forever home. If you are looking for a dog that has been trained and is still only a puppy, come visit me at the Bangor Humane Society.

Cuda Gets Adopted

Thanksgiving for Cuda!!!

This is the third post for Cuda. See below posts to see how he did on his first two days.

I will say the sleepover last night was great, but being left alone for Thanksgiving afternoon was not!!! I had a little bit of anxiety and I don't know what set me off. By the looks of things, I must have run from room to room tearing at the shades. I've been left alone at the Littlefields for a morning in the past with only a peek out one shade in which I left a little wrinkle - oops. This time things got a bit out of control and it was more than a wrinkle and more than one shade. It might have been both of them leaving together as if they were going to a party - I think I would have liked going along. It also might have been that it got dark and they forgot to leave the lights on. Whatever the reason - I'm sorry:(

The Littlefields were planning on spoiling me with rawhide treats and a big bone from Petco. These are things that do not interest me. You see, I do have a bit of a deformity. I have a major overbite which prevents my top teeth from meeting my bottom teeth. I almost look like one of those cartoon characters of the talking dogs. I do love treats in which the whole thing will fit in my mouth, but the rawhide and bone will need to be saved for another dog.

As a reminder, with the exception of my little accident today, I am a great dog who is very laid back!!! If you are looking for such a dog, come and visit me at the Bangor Humane Society. If you catch me barking while in my kennel, I'm just saying "Get me outta here".

A Sleepover for Cuda!

Since I was such a great dog yesterday, I was selected for a sleepover.

Staying at the Littlefield home has become quite an adventure. You see, I do have a bit of herding in my genes (I think my ancesters were the sitting at the edge of the field watch dogs - not the nipping at the heels sort of dog) and the Littlefields have a tendency of not staying in one spot very long. So if the Mr was upstairs in his office and the Mrs was downstairs in her office, I had to quietly go from the foot of the stairs lay down for a few and then go to the door of her office and lay for a few. Back and forth, back and forth until she decided to cook and he decided to watch the game. At that time, I settled into a room where I could keep an eye on both.

We started the afternoon with a walk in the City Forest. There were more people today and a few more dogs, but remember these are things that don't excite me.

I did get left in the car for quite a bit while the Mrs did a little grocery shopping. Obviously, she forgot it was the Sunday before Thanksgiving. She also forgot that she left my bag of food right under my nose. It was tied up, so I knew that I should not have gotten into it - and I didn't.

I will let you know that I do not beg - even a little. I do like my treats and will take them gently. Remember, if you want I will sit and give a big high-five.

PetFinder said that I was allowed to sleep on the furniture in my previous home. I will say this, I will not climb on your furniture unless you give me the thumbs up. Even then, I prefer it if you sit with me. Oh yeah and a belly rub at that time wouldn't hurt my feelings.

If you are looking for a really well behave dog, I could be the dog for you. For now, I am off to find out about the sleeping portion of the date. I do hope the Littlefields sleep in the same bed, it will make my herding job alot easier.

Dog's Day Out for Cuda!

How well behaved was I while participating in Dog's Day Out? Very good - in fact you might say great!!! I am the type of dog who will always look up to you, but I do not need to be in your face or jumping up and down. If you would like to give me a pat on the head or a scratch in that special spot on my back, I will wag my tail for you to show you how much I appreciate it.

How do I like treats? Tons - I will gladly sit and give you a high-five for a treat!!!

Car rides are a great way to relax. I hope my next owners like to be accompanied by a dog on their ventures away from home, because I love car rides!!! I do not bounce around the car like some dogs, but move gracefully from one side of the backseat to the other. The Mrs. would blink her eyes and I would have moved to the other side without her knowing it. Blinked again, and I was gone to the other side.

We went for a walk in the City Forest and I loved all the smells. We saw a parade of bikes, but that did not impress me. We saw people walking, no big deal. We did see a giant black dog, interesting - but you have to remember I see dogs all day long. I do very well on a leash, never pulling - just sniffing along.

The farmer's market was quite an interesting place. All that food and vegetables and people and dogs and children. As I said interesting, but nothing to get too excited about. There was this toddler there and he wanted to give me a pat. He actually gave me a pat and kept saying "pat, pat, pat". Hey kid - I know what a pat is and if you were to look at my tail I am saying "Thanks for the pat and I think small children are pretty special". Special, but again nothing to get too excited about.

Something I do get excited about is a nice roll on the lawn. Boy, does that ever feel great. Some dogs roll only if there is something to roll in (something that doesn't smell too good), but I love just rolling on the nice cool lawn.

All Puppies Have Found Their Forever Home!

Freckles was adopted on Thursday. Rosie was adopted on Friday. The Littlefield home seems very quiet without this trio of pibbles. Goodbye little girls - we hope you have a great life and grow up to be responsible ambassadors for your breed.

I would like to take this opportunity to tell my experience with pit bulls. Over the last few weeks with these little puppies, I have had folks take one look and their hearts would melt - until they asked what breed they were. Last year at this time, my reaction would have been the same. Since volunteering at the Bangor Humane Society, the pit bulls have become my first choice. Of course by being at a responsible shelter; they (along with all breeds) have already been tested for aggression by the time I am able to take them. I have found them to be the sweetest dogs each with his/her own personality. As far as "the turning on you" - this has never crossed my mind. Remember me throwing Bandit into the shower after being sprayed by a skunk. He was one unhappy dog - and I put myself in that shower with him. Or putting Jack back into his kennel; which he did not want to be in - I put myself in that kennel with him. Every pit bull I have taken out of that shelter has touched my heart and I can't say that about all of the dogs that I have taken - names withheld :).

Dog's Night Out for Rosie and Freckles

It's been a very low key night with puppies. Within two minutes of entering the house, both dogs went to the WeePad and missed the mark by a few inches each - close, but..... Then it was off to the nice snuggly bed for a siesta. My hope is that they don't wake up at 10:00 wanting to play. Oh well, it could be worse. They could be spending this time at the shelter:(

Oops - Freckles did NOT gets adopted. It was Stripe who got adopted!!!

Dog's Day Out for Pibbles

Yesterday was a day of adoption for the adult dogs - YEAH!!! But the little pit bull puppies I've been fostering were not adopted, so this weekend is Dog's Day Out for the Pibbles. In the last few days they have grown like weeds, so we also had to do some upgrading. The dog bed we had bought for Vicki came out and dog dishes went from one to three. Personalities have intensified and these little puppies have become very independent. They have also learned a few things like - No means no! Pee Pads are there for a reason - let's try to at least hit that vicinity.

Stripe fell in love with the dog bed. She was very content just to lay there a good part of the time. The other part was another story:) Although, she did spend a ton of one on one watching the football game with my husband.

Rosie is the adventurous one in the trio. It snowed this morning and she loved going out in the snow - the other two were content staying inside. She is also the one that is the most interested in treats. Watch out - she also has a shoe fetish:)

Freckles is still the favorite. She loves giving kisses, but watch out after about 20 seconds the kisses turn into little nips - ouch!!! And don't blame her for anything within earshot of my husband:)
